Grenzeslos

Five years after their first appearance at the Carrefour Européen du Patchwork, where they paid tribute to nature, the trio Grenzenlos/Limitless (created in 2019) is back in September 2024, in Sainte-Marie-aux-Mines, to our great delight. Once again, they successfully demonstrate that we can create together without borders. They don't live that far from each other, which allows them to meet quite regularly.
In 2024, they offer us an original theme, Urban poetry, which they exploit brilliantly. Originally, an exhibition in Basel of poster artists enchants Monika and Sophie who love street art. Doris works with paper with joy, it will be in a way the starting point of the project, the trigger is found.
All three set to work cutting, dyeing, embroidering, etc. Each one sets to work according to her inspiration, her personality. They have at their disposal a beautiful range of common techniques but their personal evolution pushes them towards different achievements.
However, a beautiful harmony emerges from this exhibition. Collages, embroidery, paintings, compositions respond to each other. Abstract images, calligraphy, graffiti, free-motion portraits, transparency games… all these disparities finally result in a beautiful unity and their soft colors then offer us a poetic vision of a peaceful city.

“Since 1997, I have been creating works and collages in mixed techniques freely designed with various textile and non-textile materials, such as paper, plastic bags, etc. The collage technique gives me great artistic freedom in the design process. I print my fabrics using various printing techniques, including an inkjet printer. I work with techniques for transferring images from paper to fabric and I am inspired by images of nature or fragments of paper from magazines and newspapers. »

« In the early years of my artistic activity, I mainly worked with paper, driftwood, rust and plaster. My goal was to create sculptures and crafts.
Through continuous self-taught training and workshops with various national and foreign artists, I have expanded my field of artistic activity. My work increasingly includes textile elements.
At the moment, I am focusing on multi-layer prints, which I transform into collages with various textile and non-textile materials. I like to draw inspiration from found objects and impressions from my travels. My many years of technical knowledge flow into my own compositions. »
Sophie Maechler
She discovered her passion for textile art as a child with her mother, then during her training at a fashion school in Paris, specializing in the design of stage costumes.
Her greatest source of inspiration is nature, but also street art. She is also fascinated by old objects that bear the traces of time. She enjoys working with various materials including paper, which she integrates into textile surfaces.
