Chiaki Dosho
A mix of strength and gentleness
With the kind collaboration of Chiaki Dosho
For those who have not yet had the chance to cross her path, we could compare her to a will-o'-the-wisp boiling with creativity and a true textile genius. Her art has earned her the recognition of her peers on all continents by covering her creations with numerous international awards.
The Japanese textile artist Chiaki Dosho specialized in Japanese literature at university. After graduating, she studied fashion and quilting. It was a real revelation for her because Chiaki found in patchwok a form of limitless creativity.
First of all, she made traditional quilts and thus made her textile ranges preparing her for another form of art: textile art.
Only two years after her first steps, she created her first artistic quilt with an original pattern.
At the time, she taught in a Japanese patchwork school.
Indeed, in Japan, there are schools that provide specific qualifying training in patchwork, which gives teachers real legitimacy.
Ten years after starting to learn quilting, she studied textiles at Musashino University of Art. This is how our artist has been making quilts for 38 years.
Chiaki Dosho's work is completely unique. It is a very artistic form of quilting. It is also a fiber art. She calls her work "fiber art quilts". She uses many original techniques that are unique to her. Her works feature old kimonos, a testimony to an ancestral culture, but also recycled fabrics or fabrics sorted from her own closets. She plays with buttons, zippers and everything that gave life to the garment.
First, she cuts the fabric into small pieces like cherry blossom petals, whose bloom is one of Japan's treasures, and then superimposes them one by one to create a palette of colors.
Then, she quilts the petals with a sewing machine. This is her original technique called "Cherry Blossom". She also offers her own techniques such as "Light & Dark" and "Garrett", which use retractable sheets. Her work goes from 2D to 3D.
Even today, this tireless artist continues to challenge herself to develop new techniques.
Chiaki Dosho told us:
“I think it is important to create original works. My basic themes are life, nature and time. They are mainly wind, flowers, water, fire, light and darkness. At the moment, my main theme is "life and death".
"I think about the time of life. I think that our time flows in a spiral, from the past to the present and the future. In my works, the spiral of time turns into wind and the petals fly away."
Thank you dear Chiaki Dosho for your friendship and your renewed trust!
