Color in food

With the kind collaboration of Carly Mul

Carly Mul is inexhaustible when she talks to you about her work. Her passion shines through in every word she expresses and color is her drink.

Born in the Netherlands, Carly and her family moved to the United States in 1994.

A lawyer by training, Carly cannot use her degree because it is not recognized.

A busy mother of three, she turns to patchwork and joins a club.

On the occasion of a charity sale for the benefit of her children's school, Carly creates boxes dressed in MODA fabrics. The success is enormous and the demand multiplies.

Wanting to vary the color of her boxes, she obtains the 160 colors of the same fabric from the collection.

Her friends wanted to buy some, so she creates a website with the help of her husband to allow her to resell them. It is the beginning of a new adventure. Here she is at the head of her company whose success has not diminished over time, which leads her to open her own store "Webfabrics".

Her gift for the association of colors, their harmony, is very quickly noticed by fabric manufacturers who ask her to create new collections. New success. There is no shortage of work and Carly must stop manufacturing boxes to better devote herself to her store.

In total, 27,000 boxes will have seen the light of day, distributed between individuals, collectors, museums, etc.

In 2022, having become a grandmother, Carly decides to separate from her store to be able to devote more time to her family and her own textile creations.

Each of her quilts is an assembly of small pieces of fabric of 1'' to 2'' glued together. The different colors of quilting threads allow the pieces to blend together and create a unity. Her goal is to let the color sing and make us feel its richness and its power on our emotional state. Carly wants everyone to have their own interpretation, their own feeling when observing her works. It's up to everyone to see what they want to see, to feel what will appeal to their own experience.

In her artistic approach, Carly does not impose strict rules on herself.

Her work always begins with three colors that will give the path, the way, the subject.

Each color is essential and vibrates when in contact with another.

After making her choice, like a gardener, she "arranges", "plants", "sows" on the canvas her three spots of color to then connect them together and create a connection that will make the work vibrate and give the final goal.

The artist has a real talent and the color wheel is of no use to her.

"I am able to find in fabrics the exact color that I have seen before in nature.
It is a real gift. I am very lucky and I am aware of it"

This research process that allows her to express herself, to translate her emotional state at the moment T is essential to allow her to create.

With "My Mother has Alzheimer's. These last five years." which imposed itself on her, the artist wanted, despite the hold of the disease, to show that her mother is also joy, life.

With "Abundance" she wanted to thank and express all her gratitude to the organizers of the Houston show for inviting her to exhibit her work.

Her sense of color, her taste for fabric and her perfect knowledge of manufacturers' collections allow her to travel, to meet many people, each one as enriching as the other.

Today refocused on her own creations, she gives many courses and conferences within the various guilds and national or international shows.

But she doesn't stop there and to our great joy, February 2025 sees the release of her book:
